Social Determinants of Health are the conditions in which people are born, live, grow, work, and play. Social Determinants (SD) have a profound impact on an individual’s and community’s health and wellness, and these conditions are not necessarily malleable nor changeable at an individual level. In this series of awareness days, the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association aims to educate communities on the impact of SD, on policies that shape individuals through addressing SD, to connect students with resources and information, external associations, and to inspire nursing students to take action through their practice or academics. This first day is themed Education. In this vein, we are hosting the Education and Equity webinar!

Next week on Feb. 05, 2020 at 1330 EST (1030 PST) we will be running a webinar called "Education & Equity". This webinar will be hosted by myself and we have the privilege of having Dr. Claire Betker of the National Collaborating Centre for the Determinants of Health (NCCDH) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA-AIIC) presenting.

Claire has worked locally, regionally, provincially, and nationally and currently is serving as the Scientific Director for the NCCDH and the president of the CNA. As well, she is an active partner of the CNSA. Using collaborative methods, Dr. Betker has derived evidence about how to address the structural and social determinants of health and advance health equity in the hands of decision and policy makers. She plays an active leadership role in nursing and promotes other nurses to become involved in leadership. For more than 40 years, she has promoted the health of individuals, families, and communities to make a difference in their lives.

We are currently working on the Zoom account and the link will follow. More information can be received by contacting community@cnsa.ca or trucnsa@gmail.com, or visiting our FB page at CNSA Community and Public Health Committee or our Twitter at @CnsaPublic.
